FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I'm new to this, what class should I take?

If you have never handled a handgun, it’s been a long time, or you just want to learn more, we suggest the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course. We will go over more information and in more detail that a beginning shooter needs to know. The carry courses go over much of that information, but with less detail due to state mandated materials and time requirements.

Can I take your carry class online?

No. This is the full, 8 hour course with range time that qualifies you for the Enhanced Handgun Carry Permit.

Do you offer the Standard Handgun Carry Permit course?

No. We do not offer the Standard Handgun Carry Permit course.

How do I get my Enhanced Carry Permit?

The Tennessee Department of Safety uses an online application system to automate your application for the Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit (HCP).

1. Fill out the application on the Tennessee Department of Safety (TDOS) website.
a. Open the TDOS website
b. Click on “Handgun Permits” tab
c. Complete the login and registration
2. Record/save/print your confirmation number and your application numbers.
a. The confirmation number allows you to track your application process.
b. The application number is used to register for your Handgun Carry Class (HGC)
3. Register for the HGC under “Our Classes” above, providing ALL information requested.
4. After completing the HGC, your application will be updated online.
5. Take Citizenship/Residency proof, photo ID, and fees to a full service Driver Services Center location.
6. At the end of your transaction at the Driver Services Center, they will provide you with instructions on how to get fingerprinted and submit them.
7. Patiently wait until your Handgun Carry Permit arrives in the mail.

Note: Due to recent changes, if you have your REAL ID, you can complete Step 5 at the TDOS website.

Are there places I can't carry my handgun?

Yes – there are several places restricted by Tennessee law. Below are some of The Tennessee Code Annotated (TCA) sections related to where handguns and where they cannot be carried:

TCA 39-17-1306 – Carrying weapons during judicial proceedings.
TCA 39-17-1309 – Carrying weapons on school property. Also see Attorney General Opinions 09-129 and 09-160.
TCA 39-17-1321 – Possession of handgun while under influence.
TCA 39-17-1359 – Prohibition at certain meetings — Posting notice.  Attorney General Opinion 09-170 – Firearms on Leased Property.

Federal law also prohibits handguns at airports, military institutions, and buildings/areas.

Effective 1/1/2020: There are crucial distinctions between the Tennessee Standard and Enhanced Handgun Carry Permits, especially with location restrictions. If you have a Standard HCP, know your restrictions.

Are there political discussions in your classes?

We strive to keep personal politics out of our classes. However, we do acknowledge the very political nature of exercising your Second Amendment rights. Our focus is on helping you make the judgements and decisions that are right for you, not for necessarily for anyone else.

Are you on Facebook or other social media?

No. We value our privacy and yours. If you like our classes or instructors, please walk up to a friend, shake their hand, and share your experience.

Can I use my phone in class?

We ask everyone refrain from using their phone in the classroom. Learning is minimized and safety is compromised when there are distractions. Courtesy dictates ringers be on silent and those that must take urgent calls leave the room as discreetly as possible. Usage on the range is restricted to emergency use only.
